Frequently Asked Questions About WI-FI at Sacramento Public Library

Sacramento Public Library offers WI-FI Internet access at all branch library locations.

Here are answers to questions you might have.

Q. What is "Wi-Fi" or "Wireless Internet"?
Laptops usually come with the wireless capability built in, using a protocol such as 802.x. Hotspots are locations which allow people to connect to the Internet wirelessly.

Q. Who can use Wi-Fi ?
Anyone with a notebook computer or other device equipped and configured for 802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g wireless access.

Q. How fast is wireless connection?
The libraries have a maximum speed of 54MB. Connection speeds may fluctuate due to varying levels of use at different times of the day and proximity to wireless access points.

Q. Is there a charge for using Wi-Fi?
There is no charge to connect to Wireless access at the library.

Q. What access does the wireless connection provide?
A direct, high-speed connection to the Internet

Q. When can I use Wi-Fi?
A. At all times. 24/7. (Unless there are technical problems with the network.)

Q. What do I need to use Wi-Fi?
You must have a wireless enabled device such as a laptop or a PDA. This device must have wireless networking capabilities per specifications 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g either through their network adapter card or built into the device. Many laptops now come with the wireless capability built-in. The majority of commercially available network cards are set up to conform to the 802.11 standard.

Q. How do I configure my laptop to access Wi-Fi?
When you open your Web browser, in most cases your laptop will automatically detect the connection. If your device does not immediately connect, we suggest you try the following settings:

SSID or NETWORK NAME: any
WEP: disabled
IP or NETWORK SETTINGS: DHCP enabled -or- obtain IP address automatically
DNS: obtain DNS automatically
GATEWAY: your card should detect it automatically
NETWORK MODE: Infrastructure -or- Access point

Q. Can Staff help me configure my notebook for wireless access?
Staff cannot provide technical assistance or help you configure your notebook. Please consult your user's manual or call your manufacturer.

Q. Can I print using Wi-Fi?
The library has no Wi-Fi capable printers.

Q. Where can I plug in my notebook?
Wherever the cord does not provide a trip hazard or otherwise block access for Library patrons or staff.

Q. Am I allowed to use my notebook speakers?
Please access Internet applications with sound (e.g., Internet radio, movie previews) using your headphones. The Library has headphones for sale for $1.50.

Q. Is Wireless Internet access filtered or unfiltered?
Wi-Fi access at Sacramento Public Library is filtered.

Q. Where is the Wireless Network located at the Central Library?
The connection is strongest on the first and fourth floors. In addition, the fourth floor has more seating. There is limited connectivity on the first and third floor.
