Future Pocket-Greenhaven Library

The community is eagerly awaiting the groundbreaking of the future Pocket-Greenhaven Library scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, May 30, at Sojourner Truth Park, 7360 Gloria Drive (where Gloria Drive meets Havenside Drive at Swale River Way) in Sacramento. The groundbreaking highlights the collaboration among the City of Sacramento, the Sacramento City Unified School District and the Sacramento Public Library, all partners in the campus that includes the future library, the School of Engineering and Sciences and playing fields for soccer and other sports. Formal remarks at the groundbreaking and celebration will be made by representatives from all the partners.

The May 30 groundbreaking marks the beginning construction phase for the future projects: Sacramento City Unified School District’s School of Engineering and Sciences, Sacramento Public Library’s Pocket-Greenhaven Library, and City of Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation’s Expanded Park and Play Fields at Sojourner Truth Park. The shared construction cost is $33.7 million.

While the school and the park will open in fall 2009, the library is expected to open in early 2010. The 15,000-square-foot library will feature a quiet reading room for adults and a ready-to-read room for the library’s youngest customers. The future branch will also serve the students and staff of the School of Engineering and Sciences, a 7th- though 12th-grade, small secondary high school.

Once completed, the Pocket-Greenhaven Library will feature 50 public-access computer stations, as well as a mobile, wireless lab with 20 notebook computers; and a 100-seat-capacity community meeting room. Its collection of books, periodicals, DVDs, and CDs will contain more than 50,000 items focused on the needs and interests of community and student users.

The Pocket-Greenhaven Library has a very active Friends of the Sacramento Public Library group that has engaged in fundraising to support this library project for over four years.
