Read Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace….One School at a Time, by authors Greg Mortenson and David Relin. This inspirational book tells the story of how Mortenson’s 1999 attempt to climb Pakistan’s K2 mountain, the second highest mountain, led him to seek refuge and recovery in a remote Pakistani village. He witnessed first hand the plight of the village children who had only sticks to use as pencils to write in the dirt, as they struggled to learn. Mortenson was so moved, he promised to return and build a school. And return he did! He has now established 61 schools, in Pakistan and Afghanistan, which have offered education to over 25,000 children.
I encourage everyone in the Sacramento area to read this New York Times best-selling book and participate in a wide-array of programs and cultural events throughout September and October.

One Book Sacramento is a program that is meant to be fun. This is about neighbor meeting neighbor, reading and talking about the book, enjoying a variety of programs, and sharing ideas and experiences. It’s about children talking to their friends, parents, teachers, and others about the books they are reading and programs they attend, based on the themes from the book. We want everyone involved!
