BUSINESS STATISTICS

Are you thinking of starting a business? Are you concerned with the economic trends of a particular industry?  If so, this Research Guide will help you on the right path.  To locate books and documents on business statistics in the Sacramento Public Library use the Online Catalog.  For example, search by Keyword combining the words “statistics” with industry or business type and/or geographic location:

Following are some of the many reference resources available.  You will also find Library Catalog links <L> (via Internet accessed computers only) to online sites and references to web addresses for key titles.  Federal (FED) Government Documents are located on the 3rd floor.  Reference resources, including items in Business Services are located on the 2nd floor.

  • FED C 3.24/4: *Census of Manufactures To provide periodic and comprehensive statistics about manufacturing establishments, activities, and production.
  • FED C 3.257/2: *Census of Service Industries To provide periodic and comprehensive data about service establishments and their activities.
  • FED C 3.233/5: *Census of Transportation People use this data to analyze passenger and commodity traffic; calculate fuel consumption; and locate stores, improve highways, and the like where traffic is heaviest.
  • FED C 3.138/8: Current Business Reports – Annual Benchmark Report for Retail Trade – also online at census.gov/svsd/www/artstbl.html (includes monthly)
  • FED C 3.133/5: Current Business Reports - Annual Benchmark Report for Wholesale Trade
  • FED C 3.215/2: Current Construction Reports from the U.S. Census Bureau, provides monthly statistics for the United States and regions on new privately owned housing units
  • FED C 3.158/4: Manufacturing Profiles produces timely, accurate data on production and shipments of selected products. The data are used to satisfy economic policy needs and for market analysis, forecasting, and decision-making in the private sector.

  • R 332.67 S7852 Bus. Services Standard & Poor’s Industry Surveys, 2 volumes will report on current economic trends.
  • Periodical Bus. Services Standard & Poor's Trends and Projections a monthly newsletter that provides an in-depth review and analysis of the U.S. economy.

Additional Online Resources

Search the library’s computer databases.  In the section under Business, you will find the EBSCO Business Periodicals & Databases which provides full text article coverage of management, economics, and finance in addition to company profiles, histories, news items, and more. Reference USA contains detailed information on more than 12 million U.S. businesses, including annual reports. On the Web, for additional statistical information, check the Bureau of Labor Statistics website at www.bls.gov, the U.S. Census website at www.census.gov, or the Department of Commerce at www.commerce.gov.
